Positive Solutions for Families provides an evidence-based, user-friendly workshop series of seven sessions to help professionals working with parents and family caregivers to promote positive and effective parenting behaviours, which will, in turn, promote children’s social and emotional development and address the challenging behaviour of children ages 2-5 years.

It was developed in the US by the Center on the Social Emotional Foundations for Early Learning.

These workshops will demonstrate how families, particularly those who have children with complex support needs and/or challenging behaviour, can use the key strategies to support their family at home and within the community.

The primary focus areas of the workshops are:

  1. Building connections with your child, and using positive encouragement;
  2. Learning how to use playful interactions to strengthen the caregiver-child relationship, understand the meaning of challenging behaviour, and how to use positively stated directions;
  3. Determining the meaning of children’s behaviour, being a behaviour detective and developing and teaching rules
  4. Setting up successful routines and transitions and using prevention strategies;
  5. Teaching emotional vocabulary, regulating emotions, and problem-solving skills;
  6. Understanding how to respond to challenging behaviours; and
  7. Developing a behaviour plan to use during daily routines.
